There is a phrase within the knitting community that you will have seen on many a pin badge, mug or project bag. ‘I knit so I don’t kill people’. While I would never go to those extremes, I certainly understand the sentiment. I have recently discovered that I rely on my creative abilities, particulary knitting, a lot more than I thought which is why today I thought I’d share with you my motivation for picking up the needles.
As some of you may have seen on Instagram, we recently got a new puppy. She is a 13 week old Golden Labradoodle called Bronte and while she is the cutest thing you have ever seen, over the past few weeks she hasn’t left me with much time for knitting. For those who don’t know me I usually have quite a lot of patience and can usually turn my attention to the positives in most situations, but over the past few weeks my patience has become paper thin and I’m struggling to see any sort of lining in my cloud. I wanted to turn to my needles but the only project I had the yarn ready for was a design, but it still needs me to crunch the numbers before I can get going and I just didn’t have the energy for it. After asking others for tips on what they do to recharge their batteries whenever they have 5-10 minutes to spare, I realised that what I really needed was a simple project that I could just pick up and put down whenever I had the time (thank you Winwick Mum!). Thankfully this all tied in nicely with my DIY advent calendar and I have since cast on a simple toe-up sock which is relieving the clouds of tension nicely, even though so far it has cost me a 32″ Hiya Hiya cable. But I’m sure Bronte is saving up her paw-cket money (sorry, couldn’t resist!) to buy me a replacement.
So my top tip for anyone else struggling to keep it all together, particularly at this time of year, is to have a super simple project on the go. It doesn’t have to be knitting, it can be anything that brings you joy and that you feel you can work on easily whenever you get the chance. Something you can do that will allow your mind wander and do it’s important task of processing your day is perfect.
